This stray and street dog was spotted with a huge belly, and upon investigation and observation, it was discovered that it had been carrying this huge fat belly for weeks and months. It was even not able to move due to its weight. At first, the rescuer team thought that she might be pregnant, but then later, they noticed her unusual symptoms like heaving breathing and fatigued behaviour. It was having difficulty walking and eating food. The rescuers then brought it to the veteran, where, after the blood test, they found out that this poor street dog had been suffering from “heartworm disease” for months and needed immediate action treatment; otherwise, they could’ve lost his life. I can’t even imagine how long it has been enduring pain and suffering in this condition. Poor soul!!!!

The doctors in the clinic immediately started the treatment procedure due to her heavy breathing, which indicated heart failure. Its heart was functioning abnormally, and the swollen belly wasn’t due to pregnancy but because of fluid accumulation from the disease. The vet pumped out over 10 litres of fluid from its abdomen. Can you believe how dangerous and life-threatening this disease could be?

When the rescuers asked how the disease could be transmitted and diagnosed, the vet replied, “Mosquitoes transfer the disease through their bites, which become infected by heartworm.” They carry the larvae, and upon the bite, it mixes in the bloodstream”, Further, she explained, “It can be diagnosed by a blood test (it can detect the presence of microfilariae and adult worms), and x-rays and ultrasounds could also be performed to check the functioning of hearts and lungs.”

This disease needs quick treatment, or else it can spread rapidly and cause death in dogs.
